Periodontal Care

Periodontal Disease attacks the gum tissue and the bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease is recognized by red, swollen and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have it and do not know it! It is usually painless in the early stages. It is the number one reason for tooth loss. Research suggests that there is a link between periodontal disease and strokes, pneumonia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Smoking also increases the risk of this disease. If this disease is diagnosed in the early stages two cleanings or more per year will be recommended along with special home care. If the disease has progressed further, a special cleaning will be suggested. It is called a Scaling and Root Planing. It is done one quadrant at a time. During the procedure tarter, plaque and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line. It also removes rough spots on root surfaces. This allows tissues to heal and shrink.
